Yes they can and here are some symptoms: Dry nose, not eating or drinking, sleeping more than usual and coughing.  Some people think, can a dog catch my cold?  No, it is not the same virus as humans.

If you dog stops eating or if any coughing prevents it from sleeping or yourself, then visit a veterinarian.  Your vet may prescribe an antibiotic in case your dog is a bacterial infection, if it is a viral infection, the antibiotic won’t help.

What can you do if you think your dog has a cold? Try turning your bathroom into a steam room by running the showers hot water and having your dog breath in the steam for 5 to 10 minutes. This will help loosen any congestion.  You can also give your dog some warm chicken soup in their food that would be enjoyable for your pet and help keep them hydrated.  Keep there outside time limited and also be sure that they stay warm and dry.

Dogs and cold weather you have to be careful. Just because they wear a fur coat doesn’t mean that they can handle the cold weather.  Dogs should not be left outside for long periods of time during the winter months.  Your dog should just go out for short bathroom breaks and be sure when they come in that you dry them well and check paws for ice, salt or other other chemicals used to melt ice. These can make your dog sick if he licks his paws and ingests them.
